There have been 139 confirmed cases of mumps in Manitoba since September 2016.
Mumps is a highly contagious virus that is best known for the painful swelling it causes in the cheeks and neck area. Other symptoms are a fever, a headache or earache, tiredness, sore muscles, dry mouth, trouble talking, chewing or swallowing, or loss of appetite.
The umps virus can be spread 2-3 days before and 4-5 days after symptoms appear. Some infected with mumps may not have any symptoms at all, but can still spread the cirus to other people.
Mumps is a preventable illness, a vaccine is available. Please call Amanda or Michelle at the Sioux Valley Health Centre at (204) 855-2690, for more information.
