It has been a busy day here in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. Earlier this morning, flood crews for Sioux Valley and Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation had noticed the flood water begin to rise to dangerous levels. By 12:20 this afternoon, the levels were too high to safely allow vehicles to cross the section of Highway 21 which runs through Sioux Valley near the Assiniboine River. Flood water has since flowed rapidly over the highway in several sections. By 8:30 this evening, water had receded slightly, but is anticipated to rise again overnight. We are hoping to have the road opened again in just a few days, but that depends on several factors such as weather, upstream flow and road structure integrity. Sioux Valley members will be working around to clock to save homes in high water areas and are hoping to minimize damage as we have done our best to be prepared.
Once again, we encourage all to stay clear of flood waters, stay safe and help those in need.
We will continue to post updates with any information and photos as they are received.
